رحلت لأرى مالكا، لا لأرى الفيل
جلس الإمام مالك في المسجد النبوي كعادته يروي أحاديث رسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم والطلاب حوله يستمعون فصاح صائح:
جاء للمدينة فيل عظيم (ولم يكن أهل المدينة قد رأوا فيلا قبل ذلك فالمدينة ليست موطنا للفيلة)
فهرع الطلبة كلهم ليروا الفيل وتركوا مالكا !
إلا يحي بن يحي الليثي. فقال مالك: لم لم تخرج معهم؟ هل رأيت الفيل قبل ذلك؟
قال يحي: إنما رحلت لأري مالكآ لا لأري الفيل...
لو تأملنا هذه القصة لوجدنا أن واحدآ فقط من الحضور هو من علم لماذا أتي وما هو هدفه. لم يذكر لنا التاريخ من تلامذة الإمام مالك إلا ذاك الفتي: الإمام يحي بن يحي الليثي، أما غيره من الطلبة المتفرجين فلم يهتم أحد بذكرهم.
وفي زماننا يتكرر الفيل بصور شتى، فهل نكون ممن حدد هدفه وعمل على تحقيقه؟ ام نكون ذاك الذي هرول يلهو خلف الفيلة لا يسمنه لهوه ولا يغنيه من جوع.
ونحن نستقبل رمضان، دعونا ننأى بأنفسنا عن الفيلة -- عن المسلسلات والأفلام والأغاني وألعاب الفيديو ومضيعات الوقت. دعونا نقلع عن الغيبة والنميمة وأنواع المحرمات. دعونا ننبذ الفيس بوك والواتساب والإنستجرام والتيك توك. فلكم هي براقة -- فيلة تزين لنا اللهو واللغو وتنسل منا رأس مالنا: الوقت.
ونحن نستقبل هذا الشهر الكريم وقد غيب البلاء خلقا كثيرا لم يلحقوا رمضان وغيبت الفيلة عبادا لم يذوقوا لذته بعد، نتذكر حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: نعمتان مغبون فيهما كثير من الناس: الصحة، والفراغ
جعلنا الله ممن بلغهم رمضان فاستزادوا وعرض عليهم النفحات فتعرضوا، وفتح لهم أبواب الجنان فلجوا.
كل عام وانتم بخير
I traveled to see Malik, not to see the elephant
As Imam Malik was giving his class as usual in the Prophet's masjid, reciting the hadeeth of the Prophet PBUH and his students were circling him, a caller shouted "A great elephant just entered Madinah". People of Madinah never saw an elephant before. All students ran out to watch the elephant. Only one student stayed in place and didn't run with them. His name is Yahya bin Yahia Al-Laithy. Surprised of him, Imam Malik asked: Why didn't you run with them to see the elephant? Have you seen elephants before?
Yahia responded: I have taken this journey to see Malik, not to see the elephant.
Only one student knew why he was there and what his goal was. Therefore, he wasn't distracted and didn't waste his energy left and right. Others ran out to watch the elephant.
What a difference! History only mentions Yahia from all the students of Imam Malik; all other "watchers" were not worthy enough of mentioning.
The story repeats itself many times around us, with different types of elephants. It is our decision whether we have the determination defining our goals and work on them, or run headlessly after the elephants, neither being nourished, nor availed against hunger.
As we welcome Ramadan, let us stay away from watching the elephants -- movies, episodes, songs, video games, and other "time killers." Let's quit backbiting, gossip, and other forbidden matters. Let us throw away Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok. They are indeed distractingly shiny -- elephants that decorate unworthy amusements, diversion, distraction, and ill speech. They draw from us our grand asset: Time.
The pandemic has ceased many people from reaching Ramadan, and the elephants have ceased many others from tasting the beauty of it. We shall be reminded of the Hadeeth of the Prophet PBUH: There are two blessings in which many people incur loss. (They are) health and free time (for doing good)".
May Allah make us among those whom He granted observing Ramadan and they took the opportunity to increase their deeds. May He make us among those whom He showed His bounties and blessings and they took advantage of showering themselves in them. May He make us among those whom He opens the doors of Jannah for them and they hastened into it.
Blessed Ramadan for us all.
