The purpose of life... an interesting question.
Please read full or don't read, I tried to keep it short but it got lengthy and due to that, I couldn't explain more deeper. accept my apology to you and may ALLAH forgives me if I am wrong anywhere.
Our primary (main) purpose of being here in this world is to obey ALLAH and his commands.
Even ALLAH ask you the question: Allah Almighty says in Quran: "Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose) and that you would not be brought back to Us?" (Quran 23:115)
ALLAH further says "[Remember] when your Lord extracted from the loins of Adam's children their descendants and made them testify (saying): 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: 'Yes, we testify to it.' [This was] in case you say on the Day of Judgment: 'We were unaware of this.' Or you say: "It was our ancestors who worshipped others besides God and we are only their descendants. Will you then destroy us for what those falsifiers did?" (Quran, 7:172-173)
ALLAH says in Quran further about purpose "And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is over all things competent. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.."(Quran 3: 189-191)
Allah answer you to the question , "I have not created men except that they should serve Me" (Quran, 51:56).
Life is not all about enjoying, having fun and entertainment. In another verse of Quran Allah Almighty says that: "Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children – like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion." (Quran 57:20)
Then ALLAH says clearly, In Quran, Allah Almighty says: "I have created the jinn and humankind only for My worship." (Quran, 51:56)
Please, get over here now, Your main objective should be to become the best of us in serving and obeying ALLAH and spendind life according to his guidance to us.
But, don't just get it, now let me explain another purposes. You're created, you spend life and go away. what's the sense here? everyone is born and die, it is same everywhere and you are forgotten after few years, Someone said, Life is a stage, now its up to you how you perform. Perform bad, normal and good or extra ordinary. You want people to just see your show or you want them to stand and clap for you? and remember you for decades?
Life is also not about spending time that you're given. You life means something to the humanity. Will you work only for your own alone or will you work for the humanity too?
ALLAH explains about deeds too "And We have not created the heaven and earth and what is between them in vain. That is the opinion of those who disbelieve. And woe to such disbelievers, because of the Fire. Shall we treat those who believe and do good deeds as those who spread corruption on the earth? Or shall we treat the pious as sinners?" Quran 38:27-8
Secondary purposes of life are to serve the humanity, work for their betterment, do things that can help them. You can spend life with wealth and luxuries if you pay zakaat. ALLAH don't demands you to leave earthly things and do nothing except worshiping him for 24/7 hours, No, that's not. Your life has some meaning in accord to others, other than you. Your meaning define to give values to others. Don't just die without doing anything for the human. Every person has different meaning of their life towards humanity. Some make services, some build characters, some help financially and morally, some gives knowledge to other humans. In short if I ask you to tell me the legend guys in the past, you may able to tell me the few names, so why you know their names? why you still remember them? did they have done something good and beneficial for humankind? Just think these question, you will get the answer.
I have a lot to say but text getting too long, so I will summarize in a single scenario. You're in a boat, you need to cross the river from one edge to another. Your target is to reach the other end of river which is the day of judgment but to reach there you need a boat which is earth
(planet)
. Don't mix them, both are important. If you start thinking my purpose of life is boat. you will stay there and die but if you start thinking my purpose of life is to get to the other end of the river and leave boat behind, you won't get there. Your boat (Earth) is your need, you have to make it good that it not sinks, it can be made with good wood too, if you want to reach the another end of the river (The day of Judgment).
Last words, hope you get it. Your main purpose should be to please ALLAH but your secondary purpose should be on earth is to please humanity.
We all lives for our own, but the best thing is to live for others.
